| National/International Registries, Like Organizations, and their Affiliates |
|
Back The organizations listed in this section are primarily registries, their affiliates and event related organizations. Some, like the AKC, are a 'club of clubs' with authority over much of what occurs in the purebred world in their respective countries. Additional activities may include public education, health and genetic research, legislative and owner rights activities, etc. Mixed & Rare Breed registries have also been included when the content warranted. NOTE: There are many registries, organizations and 'networks' popping up all over the internet. A good rule of thumb when trying to evaluate the validity and integrity of any organization is to examine their purpose (i.e., mission/goals) and to also investigate their standards and practices, making sure that you VERIFY the information they present. Reputable organizations put their dollars where their rhetoric is, and will readily provide proof of successful outcomes for their programs. It is the opinion of the DogInfomat that those entities with a vested, profit making, interest in dog related activities should also have a significant investment in programs focusing on public/owner education, assistance, and support; health and genetic research; facilitating activities and events which provide owners and their dogs the opportunity to participate together in safe, fun and relationship-building activities or activities which provide an opportunity to improve the lives of the ill, challenged, or infirmed; reducing homelessness and caring for homeless dogs; rewarding responsible breeding practices (i.e., comprehensive prebreeding evaluation, appropriate placement practices, participation in rescue, etc.) while deterring others; investigating abuse and neglect and working to protect dogs from cruel and unhealthy environments and people; etc. ![]() INTERNATIONAL: Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) Belgian, French, English and Spanish versions Available 13, Place Albert I B-6530 Thuin Belgium (011) 3271591238 The FCI is a worldwide canine organization with 78 members and partners, one from each country. The FCI is not a registry. Each country's member organization is responsible for their country's registry activities and judge's training. The FCI insures that the pedigrees and judges are mutually recognized by all the FCI members. In addition, via the national canine organization and the FCI, breeder's may request international protection of their kennel name. The FCI recognizes 331 breeds. The breed standards for each breed are written, in co-operation with the Standards and Scientific Commissions of the FCI, by their respective "owner" countries (m/o country of origin). Each member country conducts international shows and working trials. The results are sent to the FCI office where they are tabulated. When a dog has been awarded a certain number of awards, it can receive the title of International Beauty or Working Champion. The titles confirmed by the FCI include: CACIB - Certificat d'Aptitude au Championnat International de Beauté (Conformation) CACIT - Certificat d'Aptitude au Championnat International de Travail (Working) CACIL - Certificat d'Aptitude au Championnat International des Courses de Lévriers (Racing) CACIOB - Certificat d'Aptitude au Championnat International d'Obéissance (Obedience) CACIAG - Certificat d'Aptitude au Championnat International d'Agility (Agility) The FCI also publishes a magazine, three times yearly, in four languages (French, English, German and Spanish). Information about the publication is available from STRATEGO, Muhlenweg 4, 7221 Marz, Austria. All previous URLs are obsolete. UNITED STATES: American Kennel Club (AKC) includes For the Love of the Purebred Dogsm a 'not just for purebreds' type section devoted to "dogs at home and life with dogs". The section includes education and informative materials related to getting a dog, care, training, health nuitrition, and more. Humor and stories, art, history, the highly successful Companion Animal Recovery program. And, the greater site includes the popular Events and Breeds sections. The Table of Contents was under construction at my last visit. UNITED STATES: Per the AMBOR website, the organization was " . . . established in 1983 with the purpose of acknowledging the efforts and achievements of mixbreed dogs and their handlers in obedience competition, to provide encouragement and support to those handlers, and to affirm accomplishments of mixbreeds in all avenues of service to Mankind". AMBOR is recognized by the United Kennel Club, Inc (UKC). While not advocating the breeding of mixes, cross-breeding of purebreds, or conformation showing of mixed breed dogs, the organization does offer competitve sporting opportunities and recognition for mixbreeds. At the website you will find Membership Information; a "What's New" section; a Photo Gallery; a Show Calendar by Event Type (includes: Obedience, Agility, Practice/Fun Matches, Musical Freestyle, Frisbee, Seminar/Workshops, CGI/TDI Tests, Herding, Temperament Tests/CGC, Field Trials, Flyball, Tracking, and All UKC Obedience and Agility Trials; Tournaments; Current Rankings; a Discussion Forum; and, more. It is my hope that from this information, whether you are interested in socialization and basic obedience training, the competitive obedience ring, and/or the agility course, you will find a local resource to help get you started on your way. If you have acquired a puppy, it is critical that you take them to puppy kindergarten and basic obedience courses. If you have adopted or acquired an older dog, especially, first time owners, you will find it INCREDIBLY helpful to attend a basic obedience course. Not just for your dog to learn, but for you to also gain insight into dog behavior and training methods and techniques. Many of the clubs listed below offer low cost puppy kindergarten and basic obedience classes. Through them, you can establish an invaluable base of supportive, local, resources to help you in understanding your dog and correcting problem behaviors, if they arise. It has also been my experience, that lasting friendships frequently evolve. And, if you are interested in continuing on to the competitive obedience arena or agility, these clubs often hold classes and practice sessions in several disciplines. It has been my experience that Obedience, Agility, and other such activities (i.e., Flyball, Frisbee, Freestyle, etc.), while competitive, are also great fun and a wonderful way to nurture your relationship with your dog. |
