This section contains a variety of sites that just didn't seem to fit in anywhere else, but that I felt might be of interest to DogInfomat visitors . . .

The majority of commercial sites included at the DogInfomat are contained in this section. The Dog SageInfomat receives NO compensation for the inclusion of any sites listed, within. And, their inclusion is not meant as an endorsement or recommendation.

The sites were, solely, included due to their potential interest to visitors.

Elizabeth Williams sent me this great snapshot of her dog "Sage". She was adopted from "Pal" in Victorville CA. Elizabeth says she is very smart, sweet and well behaved and they are very happy to have her in their family. All photos at the DogInfomat are the property of their owners and unauthorized usage or distribution is not allowed.

One of the most interesting and unique features of Dog Connections - "A comprehensive, classified collection of links, articles and images . . .", by Judith Van Noate, Humanities Librarian, J. Murrey Atkins Library, UNC Charlotte, is the Dogs in the Arts section. Here you will find information and examples of dogs in art, literature, television and, of course, on 'the web'. While the vast majority of sites, Judith has cataloged here, will prove interesting and appropriate for all visitors, please note her warning for the "Poodle Page".

Chiengora is the term used for dog hair which is harvested and spun by talented artisans into yarn for use creating clothing, accessories and other craft items. Patty Lee's Chiengora Chic website will provide you with all of the information you need to get started. View the list of dog breeds with spinnable hair, see some examples of items produced with chiengora, learn how to prepare the hair, take a spinning lesson, learn the tools of the trade and locate vendors and resources of more information. The Siberian Husky folks are spinning Husky hair to benefit rescue. (Scroll down to view photos) Janet Whitesell spins the undercoat into yarn which is turned into scarves, hats, mitts, dreamcatchers and other items by various Sibernet-L members. They are then sold at the Save Our Siberians - Siberspace Rescue Fund Auction website. The Afghan rescue folks also spin yarn to create hats, scarves, pillows, and more. You can also purchase the yarn in 2 ounce skeins for your own knitting or craft projects. See the Yarn for Rescue website to learn more about the project and view items for sale. The Samoyed Association of Canada has a program called "Fur for Friends" to benefit Canadian Samoyed Rescue.

There have been over 4,000 dog stamps issued, with almost every breed and relationship to man, represented. And, the "Dogs on Stamps Study Unit", a non-profit philatelic organization, of the American Topical Association, specializes in the collecting, study, and enjoyment of stamps and other postal items that pertain to dogs. The organization, also, issues a special stamp, DOSSU Local Post, each year to promote "National Dog Week". The stamps are printed in sheets of 8 and a donation of $1.00, per sheet, is solicited to help defray the costs of publicity. See the site for more info. From the site's index page, an informational and historical overview of dogs on stamps is available as are several examples of dog stamps, by category, in "Man's Best Friend". The site also has organization and membership information, links to related websites, and dealer information.

Misha lunchbox Caylor's has created a fun site -- the Index of Famous Dogs, Cats & Critters. In the "Dogs" section, you will find a lengthy list of famous dogs with related information, as well as two supplements: the Index of Famous People's Dogs and, my son's favorite, the Dogs on the Simpsons.

A few additional sites dedicated to famous dogs that I've come across include:
FDR's Fala is featured at the 'official' Fala website

Chuken Hachiko (Loyal Hachiko) was a famous Japanese Akita, owned by a Professor Ueno, of Tokyo. He would accompany his master to the train station each morning and return to the station, each afternoon, to greet him. When Dr. Ueno did not return, after suffering a stroke, Hachiko continued to return to the station - each morning and each afternoon - for 10 years. Several monuments have been erected and events held to honor this loyal dog. You can see many photos and read more about Chuken Hachiko at the Media-Akita's Akita Home Page. You can also learn about Chuken-Shiro, a lesser known dog hero who has a major shrine dedicated to him on the mountainside of Kuzuhara.

    Colliewoode Production's Lassie Network

A site dedicated to that adorable little "RCA dog, Nipper, "Nipperscape", includes Nipper history and interesting tidbits about one of the world's best known canines and his successors.

Beverly Wood's site is a tribute to Patsy Ann: "Official Greeter of Juneau, Alaska"

Diane MacIntyre, is webmaster of The Silents Majority's Rin Tin Tin page

Presidential Pet Museum which is part of the Presidential Museum Foundation.

Roadside America, "your online guide to offbeat attractions", includes a Pet Cemetary guide to the final resting place of America's most famous, or infamous pets. Cemetary areas include: the 'Noble Dogs Mausoleum' where you will find Balto, Boomer, Old Shep and others; the Mascots page - final resting place of Reveille, Dodger and King Tut, to name a few; the Celebrities, Dead Pet Gazette a humorous spoof of the tabloids; Pet Vets a tribute to those who have served their country; and more. A clickable map of the cemetary will allow you to go directly to each section of the cemetary. Each location has a description of the pet buried there as well as directions to the 'real world' monument or resting place.

The Wishbone Home Page includes a video clip, Jack Russel Terrier information, Wishbone facts & activities. A must-see site for Wishbone's fans.

The American Pet Product Manufacturers Association was founded in 1958 with a membership of 17 manufacturers. Now boasting over 500 members, the association's annual trade show is the premier event in the pet products industry featuring the New Product Showcase with awards given in multiple categories by species. The APPMA was established to "promote, develop and advance pet ownership and the pet product industry". While, as could be expected, much of their site is tailored to their membership, there are some items of that dog owners will find interesting, such as: the results of the bi-annual pet owners survey, hot new products, and a variety of current and archived articles related to pets.

Well, I think we all knew it was only a matter of time before the two *big name* US dog publications came online. And, although I am not sure which came first, Dog Fancy or Dog World, they are now both available for your enjoyment. Dog Fancy, IMHO, covers a somewhat broader constituency with topics of interest to all dog lovers - purebred and mixed, pet and show, etc. The Dog Fancy site includes regular features and news; an interactive game "Virtual Lucy"; a Library of information; the K-9 Kids section, which showcases young artists and writers; the "Bowser Browser" - links, and more.

The Dog World site, while not as content rich at my last visit, contains the "Breed Spotlight" section; "Dog Talk", a Bulletin Board; an events (show) calendar, by event type; and, "help the canine mind!", a behavioral Q&A forum with Peggy Moran, and more. The site is, IMO, advertisement "heavy". And, both sites, have unfortunately decided to include marketplace type breeder classifieds.

NOTE: Although these linked sites include breeder listings/referrals, remember that without thorough and thoughtful personal education and research, regarding the best breed and breeder for you, it is much more likely your dog ownership experience will be filled with frustration, disappointment and pain. Further, your pet may wind up the resident of a shelter or rescue, or worse. The inclusion of these sites at the DogInfomat is meant in no way to serve as an endorsement or recommendation of any breeders who may be listed at these sites. Visit the "Library" for more information related to dog and breeder selection.

I was unable to locate the original site for the popular UK dog magazine, "Dogs Today", however, a site for the publication is available as a part of PetsPark.Com.
