NOTICE/OP ED: ANIMAL WELFARE/RIGHTS: As is true in so many areas these days, the dog world has become increasingly political, with extremists representing both 'sides' of many issues. This is, especially, true in the area of animal rights, welfare, and legislation. There are those who would lead you to believe that any proposed legislation will end pet ownership, as we know it. And, conversely, there are those who believe that any pet ownership is akin to animal 'slavery'. My personal belief, is that, most Americans take a more moderate stance with regard to animal 'welfare'. It's been my experience that the majority of visitors to this site support spay/neuter, rescue & shelter objectives including adoption related activites, and responsible ownership, including education and training support for pet owners and potential owners. Additionally, they believe in the humane treatment of animals and that pet ownership can enrich the lives of, both, animal and owner. Please be sure to independently research and investigate any animal organization you consider becoming involved with or making a donation to. |

Dogs Needing Homes @ Yahoo! Groups People Needing Dogs @ Yahoo! Groups Pet Finder is an on-line, searchable database of animals that need homes. It is also a directory of the animal shelters and adoption organizations across the country (USA). Organizations maintain their own home pages and available pet database. Pet Finder was originally developed by a small group of people who volunteered their time and resources to promote and benefit the homeless pet population in the New Jersey area. In August, 1998, Pet Finder USA launched it's new, expanded website. This site represents the efforts of many volunteers, including organizers, Betsy and Jared Saul, to serve both shelter and rescue organizations as well as those looking for a companion. Searchable and browsable access is available, but the site's best features include the database and companion search capabilities, convenient arrangement and access options, and asthetically pleasing graphics. Member organizations can utilize the Pet Finder's database facilities to enter organization information as well as details about pets they have available for adoption. At my last visit, there were 120 member shelter & rescue organizations listed. Visit the "Shelter Sign-Up" page for more information and registration instructions. For those seeking a pet, there are several search options available including species, breed, and location. The Pet Wanted and Post-A-Pet databases which allow those seeking pets or those with pets seeking homes to post information which may be viewed and responded to by visitors. This feature is currently under development and a planned revision will include options for regional, expanded, and national searching. Shelter & Rescue volunteers and staff are strongly encouraged to visit the site and actively participate in utilizing it's services. Without the active participation of member organizations, this service will not reach it's maximum potential to assist homeless animals. And, if you are looking for a pet, please check out the listing of pets seeking new homes. Petfinder has also forged collaborative relationships with national organizations and businesses to promote and facilitate adoption. PetAdoptions.Org was created by volunteers at Technology Integrators, an Internet web hosting and consulting business, to help organizations save the lives of homeless pets by making it easier for potential owners to find available pets through the Internet. Their nationwide online database system allows all pet shelters, pet rescues and non-profit organizations to list and update pet information which is available to anyone on the Internet to browse. Potential pet owners can search or browse the site's listings of adoptable pets. The service is free. Pet shelters and rescue organizations can also sign up online.Their posted policy states, "We do not condone or support the sale of pets when there are so many needy loving animals looking for good homes. Therefore animal breeders or sellers are not permitted to use this site. In addition, all organizations that wish to participate in this web site will be screened prior to acceptance into this site." - Find shelters and rescues in your area, adoptable pets, watch the Save A Pet Show, listen to the new theme song, and more.
