    HISTORY & BREED BASICS

Who hasn't heard of Ashley Whippet? Hailed as the Best Frisbee Dog Ever, this famous flyer was the World Champion from 1975 - 1977.
IbbenHowever, Frisbee Fetchin' is just one of the many talents of this breed. As the fastest domesticated animal for their weight, these aerodynamic sighthounds excel in the race. Often referred to as the "wheel-backed hound" due to their appearance while racing, they are also quite versatile with Coursing, Obedience, Agility, Flyball, in their repetoire. They significantly outpaced all other hound breeds, in 1997, with 195 JCs, 114 SCs and 4 FCs (Lure Coursing Titles) awarded Whippets by the AKC. Additionally, in 1997, Whippets completed the following AKC titles: 44 Obedience Titles, 22 Agility Titles, 221 Conformation Titles and 3 Tracking Titles (including Variable Surface Titles). Whippets also make excellent companions for properly matched owners.

Above: Y NOTZ IBBEN SHAWN LCM "Ibben" finished his ASFA Field Championship in just 3 trial's taking BOB in two of them, at the ripe old age of 13 months. Ibben finished his LCM after a long winter lay off at the first two lure trials of this year. He has also run in 3 AKC trials (winter of 97), and has earned both majors, went BOB two of the three days and won BIF and the Best of the Best competition for the weekend. Photo contributed by Ibben's owner, Tommie Porter. See more at the Y Notz Whippets website

The breed is lean, yet muscular with excellent cardiovascular capabilities. Height approximation is 18"-22". Weight: 28 lbs normal max. The coat is short, fine and close and any color is accepted.

Originating in the 1800's, they were created by crosses of small English Greyhounds and various terriers. It is thought that Italian Greyhound may have been introduced into the breed, at a later date, to help set the type. The breed is recognized by numerous registries including: FCI (Worldwide), AKC (US), UKC (No America), KC (UK), CKC (Canada), and ANKC (Australia).

As with any energetic breed, the Whippet requires substantial outdoor exercise. They are intelligent and affectionate. Gentle motivational training methods are highly recommended. The breed is normally hardy and stronger than their appearance might indicate. They are very clean dogs with coats that require little care.

    Patch & Spot
    Agility/Flygility

Mary Jo Sminkey's Agility Page is the consummate agility resource on the internet.

The Good Dog Agility Website is the online 'home' of a group of agility enthusiasts from Phoenix, AZ. The site has developed, quite nicely, since it's inception, into a quality resource for people interested in agility.

The Agility Mail List (formerly Agility-L) Home Page, the WWW resource site for the "Biggest Agility Club on Earth", serves as a reponsitory of information about the sport of dog agility.

At right: Spotlight on JRs - Mary Magee's son, Patch, entered the ring at the Indy Winter Classic Hoosier Kennel Club show February 8, 1998 with "Spot", Bohem Phantom of the Opera and, out of his Jr Novice Showmanship class, Patch took FIRST PLACE!

The Wellington Hurricanines Flygility Website is a great place to be introduced to this new canine sport. "Flygility is a dog sport that mixes elements of agility and fly ball. As in flyball the dog is sent to fetch a ball from a flyball machine and returns the ball to the handler. The sport is administered by New Zealand Flygility Dog Association." The site's 'Rules' section includes information about the levels of competition, equipment, course site & layout, titles & certificates, tournament regulations and more; the 'Events' section includes international event listings; downloadable Flygility Courses; a 'networking' page to locate others interested in doing Flygility; and, more.

Additional clubs, with a web presence, who participate in Flygility include: Northbridge Flygility Dog Group Auckland AU and Catchers on the Fly San Diego CA.

    Frisbee

Mary Jo Sminkey's Dogpatch features a Frisbee page with a listing of Past World Champions; Online Dog & Disc Clubs; and, more.

National Capital Air Canines (NCAC) is a Washington D.C. Area Frisbee Dog Club. At their site, you will find the Frisbee Dog FAQ and related information as well as a rescue page (Not necessarily Whippets, but a good idea that I wanted to share) that they believe would be good Frisbee dogs.

The QuadrupedŽ is a multi-dog team long distance Disc catching competition and performance - the brainstorm of Jeff Hoot, who in 1995, thought of the idea during halftime at a football game. Read more about it!

    Flyball

While Border Collies seem 'Born to Flyball', Whippets also do quite well in the sport. See the NAFA (North American Flyball Assocation) 1997 Whippet Statistics and the Totals & Top Breeds section of the Breed Analysis Page. And, while you're there, be sure to take a look at the Hit Squad Home Page, where you can learn more about Sinbad, Charlie and Merlin - three Whippet Flyball stars. Other teams featuring Whippets include Pawbusters, Ballderdashers and Stray Dogs. Learn more about related organizations, teams, the dogs and more . . . at Kathryn Hogg's comprehensive Flyball Homepage.
