    Der Kangal, Elisabeth von Buchwaldt

    * There is a bit of a controversy between, what are know in Turkish Dog circles, as the 'splitters' and the 'lumpers', as to whether the Kangal and Anatolian are different breeds. I will leave that debate, to the experts. However, I will say that these breeds are similar in that they are NOT low maintenance breeds. Especially, in the case of the more rare, livestock guardian breeds. Their strong working drives, size, exercise and maintenance requirements, and uniqueness, make them inappropriate pets for all but those who have become thoroughly educated about the requirements of ownership and who are totally committed to meet those needs, for the life of the dog. Also, remember that rare breeds, frequently, fall victim to exploitation by profiteers who care little for the health or welfare of the dog or whether or not it is the right breed for you. This is evidenced by the often, sharply, rising rescue and shelter populations of breeds, such as these, as they become increasingly available. If you would like to read more about the S v L controversy, please read the Kangal Dog FAQs and Articles and the Lumpers vs Splitters FAQ at Sue Kocher's "Kangal Dog: National Treasure of Turkey" website . For another perspective, visit the ASDI History Page and the ASDI's Breed Info Page. Be sure to independently research both sides of the controversy and apply your own filtering and verification methods to anything you might read.
